Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes was known as juvenile diabetes in the past. This type of diabetes is more common in young adults and children. The insulin is not produced by the body in this type of diabetes.

Insulin is a kind of hormone which converts starch, sugar and other food into energy which is required in our daily life. This type of diabetes is serious and the people suffering from diabetes can lead a healthy and long life. About 5-10 percent people are suffering from type 1 diabetes.

Causes of Type 1 Diabetes

Certain factors can be the causes of this type of diabetes such as:-

  • Diet
  • Genetics
  • Exposure to certain viruses
  • Lack of insulin

Signs and Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes

Certain symptoms increase this type of diabetes such as:-

  • Weight loss
  • Extreme hunger
  • Increased thirst and frequent urination
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision

Risk Factors of Type 1 Diabetes

Some factors can increase the risk of Type 1 diabetes such as:-

  • Race
  • Family history

When to Seek Medical Advice

One should consult the doctor immediately if one notices certain symptoms. The diabetic patients should have a regular checkup from the doctor. The doctor will recommend certain suggestions to keep their blood sugar level in control. If one is suffering with the kidney disease or high blood pressure along with the diabetes, then one should consult the doctor.

Diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes

First of all, the doctor take steps to stabilize the blood glucose and signs of the disease before taking any test to confirm the presence of the disease. Two types of tests are taken by the doctor to diagnose type 1 diabetes and they are:-

  • Random Blood Sugar Test
  • Fasting Blood Glucose Test

After performing these tests, the doctor takes another blood test called as hemoglobin A1C test or glycated hemoglobin which measures the amount of sugar in the blood which is attached to the hemoglobin molecules.

Complications

Two types of complications can occur during type 1diabetes – short term and long term.

Short Term Complications

  • Increased blood acids
  • Low blood sugar

Long Term Complications

  • Nerve damage
  • Heart and blood vessel disease
  • Eye damage
  • Kidney damage
  • Osteoporosis
  • Skin conditions

Treatment of Type 1 Diabetes

One can control their blood sugar level by following certain treatments such as:-

  • Doing exercise and physical activity
  • Taking good food
  • Taking Medications
  • Avoiding alcohol
  • Avoiding any type of illness

Sometimes treatment for type 1 diabetes also includes pancreas transplant and islet cell transplantation.
