What is varicose vein?

Varicose veins are basically an abnormality in veins. The function of veins to return deoxygenated blood from different body parts to heart and lungs. The valves of vein prevent backflow of blood into the veins.

The vein’s walls are much thinner and weaker than the wall of arteries. Regular pressure over the walls ends of in a vicious cycle and worsens the veins condition. The maximum pressure if faced by the walls of veins in legs, as they have to pull the blood against the force of gravity.

The abnormally enlarges, weaken and swollen superficial veins are the varicose veins. They are red, blue or violet in color and are clearly visible near the skin. Due to varicosities, the veins become unable to return the blood to heart and lungs efficiently, as a result lot of deoxygenated blood remain back in the veins pool. Mostly this problem is prominent in women.

What are the causes of varicose veins?

The basic cause of varicose veins is still unknown, but it is definitely related to the excess pressure that falls on the walls of veins. The function of preventing the back flow of blood into the vein pool is controlled by the valves.

When any problem occurs is valves like any damage or defect, its direct effect is seen on the flow of blood. Till now it is believed that the problem in valves is the main cause of varicose veins. Other influencing factors are obesity, trauma, prolonged standing and sitting and heavy weight workout training.

What are the diagnosis steps to confirm that the condition is varicose vein?

The diagnosis of varicose veins is not a big trouble. It can be very easily identified by simple physical checkup. However, the patient is asked to undergo a Doppler ultrasound test to know the cause of varicose veins. It is a painless test just to determine the function of valves. The test can also make out the clotting of blood into the veins.

Is varicose vein a chronic and severe problem?

In maximum cases, they are just of cosmetic nuisance. Even after discovering the problem in body, one does not take proper steps, it gets worse. Not only varicose veins, but any problem gets worse without proper treatment. If varicose veins are not treated timely, it is more likely to develop in:

  • Mild swelling over the feet.
  • Dark pigmentation near the anklets.
  • Ulcer over the anklets
  • Occasional clotting of blood in the veins
  • Infection in veins.
