Cause of Varicose Veins

The abnormal condition of the veins getting distended and swollen is called varicose veins. This abnormality is usually visible in the veins of the skin at the ankle. This is also called varicosities.

The main causes of varicose veins are as follows:

Weakening of the Walls of the Veins: Under extreme circumstances like standing for long hours, the wall of the veins especially which are in the legs and near the skin, becomes weak and starts protruding out. They become more prominent. The extensive pumping of the blood from the skin to the main vein makes the superficial veins near the skin weak.

Damage to the valve in the veins:  Extensive standing or ageing can lead to the damage of the small valves in the veins. These valves are important to push impure blood from the skin into the main veins and further towards the heart from where the blood is sent to lungs for purification.

In the event of damage to the valves of the vein the blood will not be pumped effectively and efficiently in to the main veins resulting in collection of impure blood at the end of vein near the skin. This ‘pool’ of blood makes the vein bulge out and make your legs look ugly.

Inheritance: Most of the people believe that varicose veins are inherited from generation to generation. Some people also hold the inheritance responsible for malfunctioning of the valves and thus hold inheritance responsible for varicose veins.

Extensive standing: The Extensive standing in the professional life or on the line of duty takes its toll on the body especially the legs. The varicose veins or spider veins that are prominent on the skin of the ankle show how much leg work the person has done in his life.

Inborn Abnormalities: In some cases the child is born with abnormal veins. The wall of the vein may be thin, weak and the valves being defective. In such conditions the impure venous blood cannot be pumped out of the tissue through the veins. In such cases there is increase in the pressure in the veins that are superficial resulting in varicosities.

The severity of the varicose veins can be aggravate if the patient

  • is a pregnant female
  • is obese (very fat) with a belly that is distended
  • is suffering from urinary retention, chronic constipation, chronic cough and enlarged prostrate.
  • has undergone a leg surgery in the past
  • Is aged.
