Types of toothbrushes

Proper teeth care is an essential activity for good health. Just from the beginning of the civilization enough care was given to teeth care. That resulted in a lot of change in the size and shape of the toothbrush.

Today, there are a variety of toothbrushes available in the market. One can choose out of them according to his requirement and suitability. The toothbrush can be categorized in following types:

Manual toothbrush

The manual toothbrush is the oldest type of toothbrush. It is the developed version of the tooth pigs used in the ancient history. These days soft nylon and other synthetic materials are used to make the bristles of the toothbrush. The handle and head is made from the hard plastic material. A variety of manual toothbrush available in the market, one can choose according to the requirement and suitability.

Electric toothbrush

The manual toothbrush did not proved to be effective in removing the plague and bacteria. That resulted in the invention of the electric toothbrushes. The first electric toothbrush was made in Switzerland in 1939. The electric toothbrush has the rechargeable battery that supplies them power to rotate.

There are many powerful electric toothbrushes that supply thousands of strokes per minute. There are a number of rotating techniques used by electric toothbrushes: side-to-side, circular, rotation- oscillation, counter-oscillation etc.

Sonic care toothbrush

The sonic care toothbrushes are made on the concept of using saliva for proper cleaning of the teeth. The sonic care toothbrush uses sonic waves to activate the saliva, which has the inbuilt quality of cleaning the teeth. These toothbrushes are more effective in comparison to the electronic toothbrushes.

Chewable toothbrush

Chewable toothbrush is the latest trend in the toothbrush industry. In fact both manual and electric toothbrushes are not so much effective in removing the plague. The chewable or fuzzy toothbrush contains xylitol, flavor, aqua, and gelatin etc.

xylitol is an element mostly used in chewing gums. Inclusion of xylitol makes it easy to chew the brush. This brushes has made the brushing process simple and easy. It is an all in one technique; there is no need to have water and paste to apply this toothbrush.

The chewable toothbrushes are still not marketed at the large scale. The other drawback is that it contains gelatin that is not chewable for the vegetarians. In future it is expected that there would be new inventions to make the chewable toothbrush more effective and chewable for the vegetarians.

Though there are a lot of varieties available in the toothbrushes but the effectiveness of a toothbrush lies in the proper technique of using it. Maintaining good oral hygiene, and use of proper technique make the teeth more healthy and the smile more attractive.
