Microdontia

Human teeth are extremely important as they serve as a necessary part of the digestion system and make good facial expression. They are a number of diseases which can effect the growth of teeth. Some common diseases are anodonitia, macrorodonitia, microdonitia etc.

Microdonitia is a common disease of teeth. This is the disease in which all or some teeth of a person are smaller than the normal size. This is a rarely found disease which occurs because of the genetic disorders. There are rare chances of finding this disease alone i.e. there are some other by the abnormalities like pituitary dwarfism.

Generally this disease affects just one or two teeth. The tooth affected by the disease became “peg shaped”. This disease mostly affects the lateral incisors and small third molar teeth. Sometimes the effected tooth seems missing from the outer sides and peg shaped between the other teeth.

The cause of the disease is genetic disorder. it occurs mostly in the child of relative parents. The worst form for the disease is that it occurs with other abnormalities like dwarfism. Other associated abnormalities indicate the presence of the faulty gene in that person.

In its general form there is no need to give any special treatment to the patient suffering from microdonitia. If one or two teeth are affected the person became familiar with these and the other tooth completes the requirements. If the lateral incisors are small: in such situation the facial expression of the person became strange.

In that situation the medical treatment is needed. The suitable treatment is that the affected teeth can be replaced with the artificial teeth of the same size. In worst form of the disease patients complete set of the teeth is very small and it became difficult for him to chew any thing. In that situation the complete teeth are replaced with the artificial teeth.

The recent study by the dental department of Gaza University of turkey reveals that the microdonitia can be cured through over denture. The research is under process. It is expected to bring good results in future.

To avoid such dental and other physical abnormalities, the better way is to discourage the relative marriage. Often this type of abnormalities occurs when both the parents carries the same faulty gene. The chances of carrying the faulty gene in the next generation are double in relative parents in comparison to the parents which are not relative.

These types of disorders rarely occur so it is everyone’s duty to treat the patient with sympathy.
