Abnormalities in size of teeth

There are many abnormalities associated with the teeth. These are the abnormalities of size, shape, and number of the teeth. These abnormalities occur because of the ectodermal dysplasias (a disease in which the hereditary syndromes do not progress).

Reasons

The general reason of these abnormalities is genetic disorder. The disease occurs because of the faulty gene. It mostly occurs when both the parents carry the faulty gene of the same disorder. That is the reason that the child of the relative parents has more chances of getting the disease in comparison to the child of normal parents.

The general abnormalities of the size of the teeth are Microdontia, Macrodontia:

Microdontia (very small size of the teeth)

Microdontia is a common disease of teeth. This is the disease in which all or some teeth of a person are smaller than the normal size. This is a rarely found disease, which occurs because of the genetic disorders.

There are some other abnormalities, which generally occurs with the disease: the most common is pituitary dwarfism. Generally this disease affects just one or two teeth. The tooth affected by the disease became “peg shaped”. This disease mostly affects the lateral incisors and small third molar teeth. Sometimes the effected tooth seems missing from the outer sides and peg shaped between the other teeth. In some case the patient’s all teeth are very small and it is difficult for him to chew anything.

The only possible treatment of the disease is to replace the natural teeth with the normal artificial teeth. The recent study conducted by the Gaza University of Turkey shows that the disease can be cured through the process of over denture. The method is still under scientific research and it is expected to bring good results in future.

Macrodontia

Macrodontia is the name of the disease where the size of the teeth is bigger than the normal. This disease is generally associated with some other abnormalities like gigantism (a condition in which the size of the body grows more than the normal). Though the characteristic of gigantisms occurs at the later stage then Macrodontia. The mare reason of the disease is genetic disorder.

The only possible treatment of the disease is replacement of the large teeth with the artificial normal teeth. This disease is still under the medical research; it will bring forward the reason and possible treatment of the disease.
