Abnormalities in number of teeth

There are a number of abnormalities that are associated with the teeth. These abnormalities mostly occur because of genetic disorder and generally associated with other physical abnormalities.

The main abnormalities associated with the number of teeth are Anodontia, Macrodontia, and Microdontia etc.

The reason of abnormalities

The general reason of all these abnormalities is genetic disorder. These mostly occurs when a child get the same faulty gene from both the parents. The child of relative parents has more chances of having such abnormalities.

Anodontia(The comlete absence of teeth)

Anodontia generally known, as Anodontia Vera is a serious disease associated with the other abnormalities of skin and nerve syndromes. The patient suffering from the disease has complete or partial missing of teeth. There are rare chances of this disease occurring alone.

The only possible treatment of the disease is artificial dentition. It mostly occurs with the permanent teeth. But if it occurs with the primary teeth, the patient has more chances of normal dentition at the time of permanent dentition. So it is better to wait till the age of 12 to 14 till than all permanent teeth will grow.

Hypodonitia (A number of teeth missing)

The hypodonitia is a condition where the patient has the less number of teeth than the normal teeth. The numbers of missing teeth under the disease are six or less than six. The most common missing teeth under the disease are the wisdom teeth.

In some condition the upper lateral incisors or the lower second premolars are also missing. The only possible treatment of the disease is artificial dentition. The artificial teeth are bonded to the natural teeth with the help of orthodontic wire. If the front teeth of the patient are missing than an artificial structure is made to stabilize the teeth.

Hyperdonitia (more teeth than normal)

The other abnormality associated with the teeth is Hyperdonitia. In this disease the patient has more than the actual number of teeth. The excessive teeth mostly found between the central incisors. This disease mostly occurs in the population of Chinese and North American countries.

It indicates the effect of environment on the disease, yet that effect is not scientifically proved. The only possible treatment of the disease is removal of the excessive teeth. Though in some cases the supernumerary tooth never grows but it can be a reason of delay in eruption of other teeth or any other dental problem. In this condition the excessive tooth is removed with the surgery.

These all condition of dental abnormalities occurs with the other abnormalities like non-progressive skin, hair, nail, sweat glands. These all abnormalities occur because of ectodermal dysplasias (a disease in which the hereditary syndromes do not progress). The chances of getting such abnormalities can be reduced if the relative marriages can be stop.
