Abnormalities in shape of Teeth

There are a number of abnormalities occurs with the shape of teeth. General abnormalities occurs with the shape are germination and fusion. These abnormalities cause the disturbance in the normal teeth growing process.

Gemination

The gemination or twinning of the teeth mostly affects the incisor teeth. In this disease the single tooth germ is divided in to the two parts and forms double crown or double root. The doubled crown can not be noticed generally and tooth counting reveals the normal number of teeth.

Fusion

Tooth fusion is the contrary condition of gemination in which two teeth join together to form a single tooth. If the fusion starts at the time of formation of the teeth then the whole tooth is united to the other teeth, if it happens in the later stage it only affects the roots of the teeth. In some cases the root canal are shared. It can appear with either the permanent or the primary teeth.

Concrescence

When cementum of two or more than two teeth joins together, the condition is called concrescence. The possible reason of the abnormality is trauma or crowding of the teeth. Only surgical separation of the teeth is the only possible treatment.

Talon cusp

The term talon cusp is the term referred to the condition where extra cusp is formed on the anterior tooth. The abnormality affects 1 to 6% of the total population. The condition mostly occurs on the incisor teeth. It affects the permanent teeth.

Cusp of carabelli

The cusp of carabelli is a small additional cusp on the line angle of the molar teeth. George carabelli first described this cusp in 1842 that is the reason the cusp is called carabelli cusp. The major reason of the disease is heredity. This cusp mostly affects the people of European countries.

Dens evaginatus

The dens evaginatus is a condition mostly affects the premolar teeth. In this abnormality the outer surface forms an extra bump or cusp . The Asian population is mostly affected by these types of abnormalities.

Dense in dente

When outer surface of the teeth is folded inwards the condition is called dens in dente. The tooth can be formed in coronal and radicular forms but the coronal form is more common .

Taurodontism

Torodontism is the condition where the body and pulp chamber of the teeth became large. The floor of the pulp and the furcation of the teeth is rotated down the root.

The major reason of all these abnormalities is genetic disorder. Though, some of these diseases occur because of the effect of environment also.
