Sunburns

The sun which is a source of vitamin D is necessary for the absorption of calcium in the body, but the excess of it is harmful for the skin.

The continuous exposure can cause cancer, darkening of skin etc.

the ultraviolet rays burn the surface of the skin gets deeper into the lower cells. The skin is constantly opened exposed to gets dark, leathery, loose and wrinkle.

Sunburns are at more risk to fair skin rather than dark skin. The dark skin have less danger because of their pigmentation.

Treatment from ultraviolet rays are:

SUNSCREEN: Apply the sunscreen cream or lotion on the body 15-30 minutes before body is going to be exposed out in the sun.

The sunscreen available in the market are provided with sun protection factors (SPF) like SPF 15, SPF 30, SPF 45. More the SPF, better is the protection of the body

When the cream should be applied?

To decide how often the cream should be applied, you should calculate how many minutes it takes for the skin to be burnt and multiply this with SPF value.

For example if it takes 6 minutes to burn the skin then the SPF 30 cream will provide protection for 30x6=180 minutes. A higher SPF is recommended. Higher SPF value cream on face, shoulder, ankles and feet are recommended as the skin here is easily burnt.

Steps to be taken before going to in the sun:

  • Your daily diet should contain cucumber.
  • Drink large amount of water.
  • Vitamin A, C, E should be taken more.
  • Lemon juice should be taken.
  • Boil four tomatoes for two and half minutes and eat them.

Homemade remedy for sunburns:

  • Apply a paste of oatmeal mixed with milk on your paste and then wash it off.
  • Mix olive oil with equal amount of vinegar and apply one hour before bath.
  • Apply a mixture of honey and curd on the affected area.
  • Make a paste of turmeric, barley and yogurt in equal proportions and apply this paste on sunburn area.
  • Apply a mixture of four tablespoons and two tablespoons on your face. Leave this on your face for about half an hour and then wash it off.
  • Apply a paste of sandalwood on sunburn area.
  • Boil half cup of milk and add to it one tablespoon of lime juice while it is still boiling. Cool it and apply it on the affected area. Wash it off when it gets dry.

Recipes for sunburn:

SUNBURN LOTION:

  • Five drops of clove oil
  • Two to four teaspoons of powdered comfrey root
  • Eight ounces of non-medicated lotion.
  • Five drops of peppermint oil.
  • Two to four drops of aloe vera gel.

Mix all the above given ingredients in a bowl, you can also chill if u want.

CAUTION: Amounts of comfrey root or aloe vera gel can be increased but never increased the amount of clove or peppermint oils at it can cause skin irritation.

CUCUMBER SUNBURN LOTION:

  • One chopped cucumber.
  • ¼ cup rose water.
  • ¼ cup glycerin.

Squeeze the juice of cucumber with the help of lemon-squeezer and mix it with glycerin and rose water.

SUNBURN MIST:

  • Nine drops of lavender
  • A drop of spearmint
  • Two drops of peppermint
  • Two fluid ounces of distilled water.

Mix all the above given ingredients and then mist lightly over sun-burned skin.
