Chapped Lips
Lips can spilt, bleed and crack. People with chapped lips experience severe pain, redness and dryness lips.
The pain is chronic, but it can reduce when lips contact with foods or moisture.
During the winter, people are most affected by chapped lips when wind, cold weather and dry air take toll.
Causes of chapped lips
Chapped lips develop when the skin of lips loss the capacity of moisture retention. The chapped may reduce the capacity of moisture retention and give results too dry, chronic and severe pain. The following are the causes of chapped lips:
- Wetting the lips with no protection
- Allergy from dyes of lipstick
- Natural oils in the affected skin and often lessen by excessive exposure to cold, dry air, wind and sun.
- Deficiency of vitamins B or essential fatty acids, dehydration and poor diet.
The following steps are very beneficial to get rid of chapped lips:
- Take a small amount of petroleum jelly and massage it on the dry lips. It is very effective to get soft skin of lips. After this, use a damp or warm facecloth for rubbing the lips gently.
- Use a lip balm two times a day one time in the morning and other before going to bed at night to get smooth lips.
- During the daytime, use moisturing lipstick for preventing lips from dryness.
- How to treat chapped lips?
- People with chapped lips should follow the following steps to get rid of chapped lips:
- Apply petroleum jelly or lip balm on the chapped lips. One can also use the essential oil that contains vitamin E, skin moisturizer or gel, which includes aloe Vera. These oily products are very beneficial to keep the lips moisturized.
- One should drink large quantity of water like 10-12 glasses of water in a day to prevent dehydration.
- Before going to outside, always apply coat of lip balm that includes sun block.
- Remembers that cracks at the corners or around the mouth can the indication of lack of riboflavin, therefore, take supplements of vitamin B-2 to treat it.

Prevention
- Avoid more exposure to sun rays
- Keep the air in home humid
- Do not go out in cold and dry weather before applying lipstick or lip balm
- Before going in sunny weather, use a sunscreen lotion or cream with SPF on lips.
- One can treat chapped lips with phenol and beeswax
- Dab one a small quantity of petroleum jelly or lip balm before using lipstick to give lips moisture
Important notes
- Use over the counter antibiotic ointments in case of having severe chapped lips as it can become infected and cause serious condition.
- If symptoms of chapped lips not reduced in a few days after doing self-care, consult a physician as soon as possible.
