Treatment of Raynaude’s Disease

Raynaud’s disease is a very unusual condition. It affects the selected part of body like toes, fingers, tip of nose and ears.

This condition anesthetizes the extremities of the body in response to stress or cold temperature. This condition develops because of the disorder in blood vessels that supply blood to the skin.

Medications:

The medication for Raynaud’s condition depends totally upon the causes of symptoms. Medications will be effective only if they are taken in the right way. The most common symptom of this condition is contraction of blood vessels. The doctor may prescribe following medications to widen or dilate the blood vessels in order to promote the active blood circulation.

Calcium channel blockers:

These are basically the drugs to open and relax the contracted blood vessels of feet and hands. They have been proved effective for decreasing the severity and frequency of attacks in around two-third cases of Raynaud’s condition. These drugs are also found helpful in healing skin ulcers of toes and fingers.

Alpha Blockers:

This drug is found to provide relief to some people who used to get severe Raynaud’s attacks. It works by offsetting action of hormone norepinephrine, which is responsible for contraction of blood vessels. Doxaosin (Cardura) and prazosin (Minipress) are the examples of alpha blocker drugs.

Vasodilators:

This is also a drug that widens the blood vessels. Doctors prescribe vasodilator as nitroglycerin cream. One can apply this cream with the help of finger tip to the affected area. It also heals the skin ulcers.
