Aromatherapy for Depression
Aromatherapy is an alternative treatment and effective in dealing with depression, stress and stress related diseases. Aromatherapy is very beneficial for reducing depression and depression related problems like digestive disorders and other mental diseases.
It helps in mild forms or types of depression. It is very easy to use and reduce depression gradually. Essential oils are used in aromatherapy, it may help to uplift and lighten ones mood. It is very effective treatment when used like a complementary therapy.
Essential oils such as bergamot, clary sage, geranium, lavender, jasmine, neroli, sandalwood, orange, basil, cedarwood, frankincense, grapefruit, lemon, myrrh, rose, ylang ylang and spruce are used in aromatherapy for depression.
If the depression is developed with a loss, essential oils beneficial for bereavement and grief, such as rose, neroli, marjoram, lavender, hyssop and frankincense should be included. Most of essential oils that are used for reducing depression may come from fruit and flowers.
Inhalation blend for mild depression
- 4 parts of ylang ylang essential oil
- 2 parts of basil essential oil
- 4 parts of clary sage essential oil
- 3 parts of Geranium essential oil
- 1 part of sandalwood essential oil
Mix all ingredients very well in an amber glass bottle. One should use this oil at least three to four times per day.
Essential Oil Blend for Depression
- Clary Sage
- Rose
- Basil
- Jasmine
- German Chamomile
Mix all oils in a large bowl. Place 5 or 6 drops of it in a bath, 2 to 3 drops of it in a bowl of steaming water and a few drops of it on the pillow.
One should follow the following tips while massaging with essential oils for depression:
- One must use a blend of geranium, Melissa and bergamot for uplifting the spirits.
- Revitalize and revive energy with the blend essential oils by massaging the feet.
- One who is suffered from depression, take a bath with a few drops of oil blend added to the cold water.
Important tips:
- Do not use clary sage essential oil if one is pregnant.
- Never exposure to the Ultraviolet rays and sun lamps for minimum 5 hours after using bergamot and orange essential oils.
- Never use alcohol with clary sage essential oil.
- One with headaches or depression, do not use jasmine essential oil.
- Avoid jasmine for infants and children and do not use jasmine in case of pregnancy.
- Never apply any essential oils to the surface of the skin directly.
- Avoid rubbing the eyes after using any essential oils.
- Before using any essential oils, consult an aromatherapist or physician.
